Introduction to Hungarian Culture — HUC

The aim of this course is to give you an opportunity to explore certain aspects of Hungarian attitudes, thinking and cultural traditions. The notion and scope of "culture" being nearly all-encompassing and to a large extent also very individual, what this course can claim is to trace basic trends and themes, as well as to highlight the figures and works of some of the most outstanding representatives of Hungarian history and politics, literature, music, film and fine arts.

Each class will center around an issue that is relevant in today's Hungary, to be examined in its historical context, and how it is reflected in emblematic works of art, mostly from the twentieth century. You will be asked to do some personal exploration of these issues in advance, by talking to various people and/or using internet sources.
Besides, you will be asked to give 2 presentations during the term, preferably in pairs. The first one will be about art and architecture found in Budapest, to be presented together, during one class. The other one will be related to and part of nearly each class. (You will be given a list of these presentation topics during the introductory session.) You will also be encouraged to take advantage of "live" Hungarian culture. Depending on interest, our program will include visits to the Opera, the National Gallery or the National Theatre/ Palace of Arts.

Course evaluation will be based on the following criteria:
Preparation - participation 20 %
Midterm paper - Final essay 20% - 20 %
Project 1, Project 2 20 % - 20 %
Attendance is mandatory - more than 3 absences will result in failing the class.
