  Burris-Sankappanavar: Universal algebra http://www.math.uwaterloo.ca/~snburris/htdocs/ualg.html

Prerequisites: general knowledge in basic algeraic sturtures, general experinece in mathematics, high interest in doing research, basic knowledge of logic, some (possibly ongoing) combinatorial knowledge
Course description: The course covers the basic notions of universal algebra: terms, clones, variety, Birkhoff's theorem, Malcev conditions, etc. and most important structures as primal algebras, discriminator varieties, finite basis ...

It does via reading recent manuscripts on the application of algeraic techniques in other parts of mathematics (logic, computer science, group theory). During the first few weeks we study well-known open problems of the area.
