Course description:

This introductory course covers the fundamentals of the Hungarian language, including grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation. Emphasis is placed on developing basic receptive and productive skills, as well as exploring the language's cultural nuances. The course includes monthly field trips to show students some highlights of Hungarian culture, history, and the city of Budapest.

Vocabulary and functions:

  • greetings and everyday functional language
  • introducing oneself: countries, nationalities, languages; professions; age
  • basic questions and question words
  • grocery shopping and ordering food: food and drink; units of measurement; adjectives
  • city: places and means of transport; adjectives

Grammar:

  • vowel harmony
  • singular conjugation of the verb 'to be' and different verb types
  • possessives: 'my', 'your'
  • word order
  • the accusative
  • forming adjectives from nouns
  • forming adverbs from adjectives
  • expressing location and movement: 'in', 'on', 'into', 'onto'
  • the suffix 'with'
